About This Award
In 1982 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National Safety Council co-sponsored and organized a first-of-its-kind “National Lifesavers Conference” in Detroit Michigan. More than 600 leading safety advocates from throughout the United States attended. Sandy Golden was introduced to the group. Later at dinner, Sandy was presented with the first “Lifesaver Award” by the administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It was the only award presented at that meeting. Sandy did not solicit or expect it and got a standing ovation. Lifesaver conferences have been held every year since the first one.
